In this episode, Dr. Ron talks with Lieutenant General Gary Brito, currently Deputy Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, following command at Fort Benning, GA seeing that roughly 60,000 soldiers are trained every year. Home Base Executive Director Brigadier General Jack Hammond joins the conversation having worked with LTG Brito at Fort Hood and on a site survey to Afghanistan. General Brito discusses readiness for action while trusting your brothers and sisters, and mitigating the "enemy" of COVID and managing the military family as a whole. General Brito reflects on that same time period of George Floyd, and the unwavering emphasis on character, reputation and standard within the Army no matter one's color, religion or background. Not only dedicated to all soldiers in training, he remained dedicated to moving forward with success the posthumous Medal of Honor awarded to Sgt 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, the first Black servicemember to receive the highest award for valor since the Vietnam War.
- This conversation was recorded virtually in April, 2021 -
The many challenges of the pandemic including stress, anxiety, and isolation, caused an increase in mental health challenges for our Veterans and a spike in suicides amongst our military members. The recent triggering effects of the evacuation from Afghanistan and growing humanitarian crisis has made a bad situation worse and created a perfect storm of events that will require our clinical staff to grow to meet the needs of our warriors and families.
