Major General (Ret.) Patrick Sargent is the Senior Vice President of DoD Healthcare at OptumServe, the Federal-facing arm of Optum. He aptly states that service is "responsibility in motion,” and that "service is an action and not a concept — a verb, not a noun.” In this episode, Dr. Ron and General Sargent talk about retirement after a 35 year military career, his personal journey from childhood to the military, looking back on service overseas and while working in DC, and to current times at OptumServe, his new way of serving military through leadership in healthcare. This episode was recorded just after the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and General Sargent reflects on the 20-year war that has recently ended, and on his family's deeply personal connection to the tragedy that took place on 9/11.
